That’s right, it’s two weeks in a row I’m talking about Superheroes on my blog. On a side note, a few weeks ago I decided that my blog should be on Tuesdays instead of Mondays since I always post new work on Instagram on Tuesdays and I always write a sort of micro-blog on that day, so it just seemed to make sense. But that means I could be writing about Superheroes on the blog for weeks, if I keep this up. Hmmm, might have to go back to Mondays. Or could I do it on Mondays some weeks and Tuesdays other weeks? WHAT ARE THE DAMNED BLOG RULES! There must be blog Gods or something that know the answer to this question…
Sorry, this was supposed to be about Superheroes again. And the particular one I’ve decided to post today is especially relevant since she has a new movie out that’s creating long lines at the box office. Or, well, I assume it would be if people could go to movies right now. I saw Viggo Mortensen on Colbert last week and he said the theatres are open in Spain (I thought things were bad in Spain–gotta keep up on the news), so those long lines may well be happening there and other places. But I don’t think that’s going to happen here for long while, especially since Canada is way behind much of the world in even getting vaccines into the damned country. Apparently what we need is–hmmm–a vaccine Superhero! Vaccineman! No, Vaccinewoman! Wait–I’ve got it–Vaccineperson! Okay, I know we already have Superheroes working on this problem and they’re called politicians. Wait, no it’s not them, (it’s definitely not them) it’s the health care workers and we should thank them everyday. The real Superheroes!
Back to the fictional ones. As you can see here, I did a painting of Wonder Woman! Now I’ve never read a Wonder Woman comic in my life, at least not that i can recall. And I truly have read very few comic books as I mentioned last week. But one thing I really like about Wonder Woman is the concept behind her character. The fact that she is based on real Greek mythology. Not that there’s anything wrong with the made up mythology of other heroes because, let’s face it–hot take here– all mythology is made up! I think of all the Superheroes around I perhaps like Wonder Woman and Thor best, since they are based on actual mythology. Last week I mentioned that when I was a kid I bought the odd Superman comic, and as I write this I’m having a memory or two of buying Thor comics. A painting of him will have to happen. Side note–if you like Greek mythology read Mythos by Stephen Fry, or better yet get the audiobook and listen to him read it to you. But this post is about Superheroes (in case I didn’t mention it) so back to that topic.

I’ve been really enjoying making these paintings the last couple of weeks. One of the things I like about it is that I’ve been mashing up different versions of them. It’s an interesting and fun new way of showing different aspects of a character’s personality and it’s also a unique way way of kind of giving a glimpse into the history of these characters and the extremely different ways they’ve been portrayed. In this case, I’ve mashed Gal Gadot’s version with the version from the Superfriends. The Gadot version is gritty and almost dark and the Super Friends version is, well it’s for kids, so I assume it’s much lighter.
Anyway, I think I’ll keep doing this for a while. Are there any characters you’d like to see? Please remember that commissions are open at this time, although, if I like your idea I might just paint it anyway. Also if there’s a character you’d like to see, are there different versions you’d like to see mashed up? I still can’t allow comments here on the blog (damn you Artmoi!), but if you have any thoughts, comment or DM me on Instagram or Facebook @chrissimoniteart.
