The Animal Paintings and Where the Hell They’re Going

Foghorn Leghorn, 12" x 16", oil on canvas, 2021.

If you follow me on social media you’ll have noticed that I’ve been doing Cubo-Weirdist (yep, that’s what I’m calling it now–see last week’s post and of course, the new title of this here blog here) studies of animals. I’ve mentioned before that these are studies for larger paintings that I may or may not do. As I’ve written before, next year I will be in an exhibition with my collective The Frost Shield Kerfuffle called Damaged Landscapes. I’m still not 100 percent sure what I’m planning to do for that show, but one idea is to create paintings of animals that are looking back at as us if to say “what the bloody hell are you people doing to us and the only home we will ever have?”

What better way to do that than Cubo-Weirdism mixed with a little Psychological Cubism to visually explore the psyches of the animals that are affected by climate change, deforestation and all of the other things we humans are inflicting on this planet. So I will continue to do more studies of animals for the foreseeable future. Side note, while I’m calling these “studies”, they are also finished paintings, and I’m offering the smaller ones that are highly frameable on unstretched canvas for the low low price of $100.00 each. Please send me a message in the comments here, on my website, or DM me through Instagram or Facebook if you’re interested.

Having said all this, I have other ideas for what I might do for the show, but in any case they will likely involve larger paintings than I’ve been doing for the last while. So I will keep you updated, dear reader(s?)!

Anyway, as of the last couple of weeks, the animal paintings took a somewhat unexpected direction. Some of you may know that I had been doing paintings of live-action Super Heroes mashed up with cartoon versions of the same characters. I had also done a number of paintings of cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny and the Tasmanian Devil (among others). One day a couple of weeks ago it hit me “why not mash up cartoon animals with real ones”? Why not indeed! You may have seen my post of Pepé Le Pew from last week, he being the first attempt. I’d love to know what you guys think! Is it too weird, or even disturbing?

Well, I have to say, even if it is too weird or disturbing, that’s not gonna stop me from trying more! Case in point, this painting of the greatest rooster actor of all time (he says confidently), the great Foghorn Leghorn! As you can see, I have mashed him up with (no surprise here) a rooster! Pretty clever, I know! Ha! It’s pretty weird, alright, but I think I’m going to continue to go down this rabbit hole (wait does that mean I should do another Bugs?).

I’m not sure if this will be the focus of my work for the next while, or if I’ll go back and forth between this idea and the Super Heroes and who-knows-what-the-hell-else, but I have some ideas and who knows what unforeseen Cubo-Weirdness they might lead to? Stay tuned here, at my website (soon to be relaunched with a major upgrade) as well as on Instagram and Facebook! See you Cubo-Weirdos next week! Hmmm, maybe I shouldn’t call my reader(s?) that!
